Dr. Wheat was born and raised in Benton, Illinois, and attended Southern Illinois University, receiving his Bachelor of Science in Zoology in 1970. Following that, he attended the University of Illinois Medical Center, receiving his Doctor of Dental Surgery with Honors. Residency was completed in oral and maxillofacial surgery at University of Illinois Medical Center in Chicago from 1974 to 1978, receiving a specialty certificate in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Dr. Wheat has served as President of the G.V. Black Dental Society, President of the Illinois Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, President of the Board of Directors of OMSPac (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Political Action Committee), and has served on the board for the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Professional Conduct. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and is a Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, as well as a Fellow of the American College of Dentists.
Dr. Wheat has been in private practice in Springfield, Illinois, from 1978 through the present, and he is on hospital staff at St. John’s Hospital, Memorial Medical Center, Doctor’s Hospital. Dr. Wheat is also a Cinical Associate Professor at SIU School of Medicine in the Department of Surgery. He has extensive experience in most areas of oral and maxillofacial surgery with an emphasis on reconstruction, dental implants, dento-alveolar surgery and office anesthesia.
